Old concrete slabs as shelter
Old concrete slabs are readily accepted by amphibians as hibernation quarters or as shelter in the everyday fight against dehydration. Compared to natural stone slabs, old concrete slabs are often available for free or at low cost. Old concrete slabs usually offer much better shelter than piles of stones that are too small. An old concrete slab is comparable to a huge stone, which itself is almost impossible to transport. Decorating or hiding the concrete slabs can also be fun for slightly older children.
Fresh concrete is strongly alkaline due to the calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) it contains and cannot be used. It is therefore essential to use old concrete or concrete that has been heavily soaked in water beforehand. The pH value should be neutral at 7 or no greater than 7.5.
